Travelling to three places in Italy from France, is it cheaper to buy single tickets or the italy pass?
I will be travelling to Florence from Monaco on April 28th. I will then be going to Rome and Venice, and leaving Venice to go back to Paris on May 3rd. Is it cheaper to buy single tickets for the three cities in Italy, or would it be cheaper to buy the (5 day) ItalyPass
Thank you for your email. Actually, based on your travel plans, I would actually recommend just purchasing city to city tickets for your entire trip. If you were to purchase an Italy rail pass, you would only need a 3 day in 2 month rail pass, but then seat reservations will always be an additional cost. Typically, for the high speed trains, seat reservations will be an additional $5-$14 per seat, per train cost. When you purchase city to city tickets, if the train you choose requires seat reservations, the seat reservations are included in the cost of the ticket. And also, the Venice>Paris THELLO train does not offer a passholder fare as this is a privately owned train.
Please keep in mind that at this time, the Monaco>Florence segment, from Monaco>Ventimiglia (the border town) is not able to be ticketed, and you would need to purchase that 30 minute segment in Monaco. However, we are being told that within the next week or so, we should be able to book the ticket from Monaco to the border, so you might want to wait until next week to book your tickets. The THELLO train from Venice>Paris is running the night of 3 May, but you will need to choose the type of accommodations you want before booking this train as this is not changeable or refundable once the train is confirmed.
Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
