Thank you for your email. I personally don't find that it's a good idea to drive in Italy at all. The trains go pretty much anywhere you want to go, and allow for everyone to enjoy the trip. From Santa Margherita>Venice, your best option time wise is to take the train up via Genova & Milano over to Venice. By going up via Milano, the travel time is just over 5 hours. While you don't indicate when you are traveling, you can book these trains once we are within 60-120 days of the travel date, depending on the trains you want to take.
