You need to figure out how many actual days of travel on the train you will be using, then price the cost of the pass plus the cost of seat reservations which are an additional fee and a requirement on all high speed trains, vs the cost of point to point tickets. it's the only way to find out the most cost effective way.
As fare as 3 days in 2 months it means you may take 10 trains in 1 day and only use up one day of your pass, and you can use the pass any 3 days within a 2 month period, they do not have to be consecutive days. Jut remember the pass does not cover seat reservations fees which can be anywhere form $4.00 to $20.00 on high speed trains and more for overnight trains.
The pass also has to cover if you are traveling beyond the Italian border ALL countries you are traveling through
