We have plans to be on the train 3 separate days while in Italy starting June 3 and we were thinking about a rail pass which we need to order immediately [if we are going to get one] so we will have time to make the needed reservations.
Planes and customs are unpredictable so we wondered if we could make reservations on more than one train for the day of our arrival - or change the reservation if we miss the train we thought we would take - or make the reservation for a later train and change it to an earlier one if we clear customs earlier. How flexible is a rail-pass? How does all that work? Does making a change require talking to someone in a ticket office [presumably at a main terminal]? Our American cell-phones will not work in Italy.
If we decided to take a day trip on the train, would it be possible to change the pass from 3 days to 4 after we already have the pass? Does that require talking to someone in a ticket office? IF we make a reservation for our arrival day and then arrive a day late so we did not use the reservation does it count as a travel day?
It looks like we are unable to make the reservations until we have the pass in hand - is that true?
On-line I am offered an Italiapass membershp for $19. That is not a railpass, is it? Is it an addition for information and further discounts?
