The problem is that if you purchase the pass, it does not mean that you can take any train you want without reservations. If you want to take a high speed train, you will have to make seat reservations, which will be an additional $15 per seat per train, otherwise you can and probably will be fined up to 50 Euros per person per train if you board the high speed trains without a reservation.
If all you are doing is the Venice>Florence and Florence>Rome trips, then you may want to consider just purchasing the city to city tickets. The tickets will include the seat reservations, and there are different fare bases for the tickets, that have different refundability amounts, and different flexibilities to change the tickets.
