The italiapass does not offer discounts on the rail tickets themselves, you would log into your italiapass account at www.italiapass.com
click on the travel widget and the link to italiarail is there, you would book your tickets through that and not be charged the booking fee.
There are no free upgrades on the pass, the site will show if the fare for example on a Standard ticket is $50.00 and the fare in Premuim is $50.00 it says upgrade, inother words you can choose premium for the price of standard.
